It’s been a rough, tough, dismaying week for those Europeans who like to believe that the pen is mightier than the scimitar. Yes, an additional number of publications reprinted those pesky cartoons, one selling out its print run when it did so, but these were brave, temporary gestures, as evanescent as the paper on which they were printed, as futile as fists waved in the face of a storm. It says something for the cowardice, duplicity, and wishful thinking of too many of the West’s politicians (and much of its media) that one of the most striking illustrations of the crisis in its relations with the Islamic world has come from twelve mediocre cartoons. Self-censorship is tyranny’s sorry, trembling little helper, and so it’s to its credit that the right-of-center (which, in Denmark, is not very right at all) Jyllands-Posten, one of the country’s major newspapers, picked up Bluitgen’s story.
